The Pharmacology Institute under the Academy of Medical Science directs efforts into research into the components of traditional Koryo medicines and the establishment of quality management methods of the medicines. 

Samhyang Uhwangchongsimhwan, which has long been widely known as a heat-clearing and detoxicating prescription, sedative and anticonvulsant, is recognized as one of excellent Koryo medicines as it has high pharmacological effects. But there are many problems in making the medicine an extract as it is a mixture consisting of very diverse raw and medicinal materials and the method of making it is intricate. 

Through repeated intensive research, researchers developed a Samhyang Uhwangchongsimhwan capsule, which is more efficacious than pill as heat-clearing and detoxicating medicine, sedative and spasmolytic and convenient in use and storage. 

The perfection of a method of making medicine extract with pharmacological effects and effective ingredient content as main indexes, extracting conditions and a method of rational quantitative analysis provided a foundation for producing more and highly effective medicines with less raw materials. The research achievement was registered as a national sci-tech hit last year.

The institute also develops medicines effective in improving immunity of the human body and in preventing and treating various diseases.

Medicines including iodine troch, Amoxicillin troch, lycobetaine anti-cancer injection and siliberine hepatitis injection obtained patents last year.
