Medical workers of the anorectal surgery department of the Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences Hospital are recognized as a competent medical team.

Their reputation as a competent team is attributable to the fact that the medical staff of the department are holders of academic degrees.

They have ensured a recovery rate of almost 100 percent in their treatment over the past several years.

“We have oriented the work of the department to identifying urgent problems in clinical practice as study subjects and producing positive results by intensifying research and achieved successes,” said Choe Song Guk, head of the department.

Choe, who received a doctorate by authoring a paper on the treatment of rectal cancer, has established an advanced method of rectal cancer surgery and instilled vitality into patients.

In the past, it was considered unavoidable to create an artificial defecation path for patients during rectal cancer surgery.

While researching into latest literature, the medical workers of the department found a way to restore patients to normal conditions and intensified research to develop a new surgical treatment method.

In the days of the intensive study for completing a medical technology with a high degree of difficulty in accordance with the actual conditions, the medical workers confirmed the sequence of surgical procedures after defining the correct indications for the operation and trained the related skills, thus solving the technical problems arising in establishing the new treatment method.

The newly completed treatment method is of great clinical significance as it is highly effective and allows the organs to perform their physiological functions properly after surgery.

The department further improved the quality of medical service by developing and introducing several advanced surgical treatment methods, including those for effectively treating rectal cancer which has a high morbidity rate among the elderly and for reducing the treatment period of various anal diseases.

“It is a trait of our society to create new innovations in work. We are only trying to keep up with this trend of the times,” said Choe Song Guk.
