Waste used for marine structure construction
October 29, 2026A fishery station, which is not a unit specializing in the production of and research into sulphate resistant portland cement, has recently invented and introduced a new method of building marine structures by using waste, drawing the attention of the public.
In general, the construction of marine structures requires sulphate resistant portland cement, which is made of high-MPa cement and sulphate-resisting additive, a certain amount of aggregate, steel, etc.
But the employees of the fishery station scientifically and technologically proved that marine structures can be constructed with low-MPa cement and the slag from metallurgical bases without the aforementioned materials and demonstrated the economic effectiveness.
Some years ago, the fishery station planned to build an auxiliary breakwater. The construction of the new breakwater toward the existing breakwater would enable it to protect the seaside buildings well from typhoons and build a culture ground, fishing implements store and so on in the new site to be obtained. It would also make it possible to reduce the time of ship grounding and the period of ship repair, thus increasing the out fishing days, and create an anchorage for the protection of ships from tidal waves.
Accordingly, the fishery station held several rounds of technical consultative meetings for the building of the new breakwater with its own efforts while saving cement and other building materials as much as possible.
In the course of this, they came up with an idea of using slag from the production of lead and zinc at different units in the area.
It was not easy to confirm technical indices while trying to fix the mixing ratio of slag and cement in various methods.
After painstaking quest and efforts, they fixed various mixing ratios and conducted experiments to reduce the amount of cement as much as possible, thus completing optimized technical indices and establishing a unique method of curing of member.
Shortly ago, officials, scientists and technicians from research and construction units and guidance organs of different fields carried out a relevant scientific measurement at the fishery station to prove that the intensity of marine structures based on slag and low-MPa cement is very high beyond expectations.
This sci-tech success is of great economic significance as it enables all coastal areas to properly build wharf, breakwater and other marine structures while saving cement.
