Lecturers and researchers of Pyongyang University of Education No. 1 made achievements in the research into increasing the production of both grains and fish in paddy-field fish farming.

After organizing a research team with competent personnel, the university entrusted it with a research task of putting paddy-field fish farming on a scientific and informatized basis and strengthened technological guidance over it by organizing scientific councils regularly.

As a result of an intensive research effort for providing economic effectiveness and scientific and technical guarantee for paddy-field fish farming, a stride forward was made in breeding a robust and high-yielding variety of catfish.

In the course of the research into improving the catfish breed, the team developed an inbred catfish variety which is 1.3 times higher in productivity than common catfish.

Researchers of the Life Science Faculty successfully solved technical problems arising in rearing the catfish fry, thus opening up a definite prospect for producing tens of tons of catfish per hectare and boosting the rice yield. They set forth a goal of establishing a new comprehensive system for green cultivation and fish farming and made progress in putting all the processes of paddy-field fish farming, including the releasing of fry and feed supply, on a scientific basis.

Those of the Electronics and Automation Faculty and Physics Faculty built devices for accurately measuring the water temperature and oxygen content in fish farming paddies and established a system for real-time monitoring of the growth environment of fish and rice, thus making a big stride in informatizing the paddy-field fish farming. They also completed a wireless control system capable of remote-controlling the irrigation sluice gates and the acoustic summoning of fish.

The newly-bred catfish and fish farming method developed by the university have been introduced into many farms, including the Samjigang Farm in Jaeryong County, South Hwanghae Province, where they are proving effective.
