October 22, 2026

Situated in the sea off Jasan-ri of Thongchon County, Kangwon Province, Kuk Islet looks like a folding screen standing on a green carpet while going well with the East Sea of Korea.

It is 0. 054㎢in area, 1km round and 41m in height. It can be said to consist of a bundle of stone pillars. The spot where the eastern and northern walls adjoin each other is as sharp as prow and has two small caves.

In the caves there stand bundles of stone pillars in rows in a more orderly way than those outside.

Shrubs and grasses grow on the islet, seabirds inhabit it and it abounds in marine resources.

The islet was originally called Juk Islet as many bamboos grow there. Later it was called Kuk Islet as the Korean people made arrows with the bamboos growing on the islet to defend their country.

The islet in the middle of the sea is under good protection and management as a natural monument with very beautiful scenery.
