Changsong sheep spreads across country
October 12, 2026A good breed of sheep is raised in Changsong County, North Phyongan Province.
The breed, called “Changsong sheep”, has a higher growth rate than other sheep species as the ewes reproduce easily and produce much milk. It has a good appetite, is highly resistant to heat and cold and adapts well to the herd life.
The annual milk yield is about 150 kg on average and the milk can be used to produce various dairy products, including sour milk, cheese and butter. The hair length is 10-12cm on average.
Changsong sheep has the characteristic of maintaining lipocytes and increasing body weight even when it feeds on rough and innutritious food.
If it is improved into a breed for wool production, the production of meat can be increased with naturally growing grass and a small amount of grain by-products.
The fat produced from the tail of Changsong sheep can be used to produce edible oil and daily necessities.
The wool is mostly used to make carpets and can also be used in the production of quilts, overcoats and gloves.
In order to raise the highly profitable Changsong sheep on a large scale, the county has created more than 1 000 hectares of grassland and a migrant pasture on the Muwon plateau.
Meanwhile, it established a system of preserving the progenitor while giving priority to the veterinary and anti-epizootic work and made Koryo veterinary medicines by its own efforts to lower the death rate.
Today, the demand for Changsong sheep is growing steadily, and it is spreading throughout the country.
