Along with the educational revolution in the new century, Kim Il Sung University has also made remarkable achievements in education in the past decade.

Establishment of advanced educational structure

With the goal of becoming one of the most prestigious universities in the world, the university turned its educational structure into a research-type academic one and established a well-regulated sequential education system from regular to postgraduate courses.

In particular, it bolstered the postgraduate education system while pioneering the fields of cross-disciplinary science and cutting-edge science. As a result, the rate of undergraduates’ enrolment at graduate schools has been raised.

The university also established a system of training outstanding development- and creation-oriented talents and specialists in various faculties and departments and set up new faculties and departments to lay a foundation for training talents in a wider range of fields.

It set up an informatization system to enable students to select subjects according to their individuality, aptitudes and research objectives and introduced a full credit-based educational management system.

It revised the curriculums for dozens of courses of study to fully ensure the number of teaching hours of special subjects.

In the course of that, dozens of departments and faculties of the university became the first-rate ones including the Department of Modern Physics of the Physics Faculty which led others in becoming such a unit.

Improvement of teaching contents and methods

According to data available, the university wrote and published nearly 900 kinds of textbooks on a world level and improved the teaching contents on this basis in the past decade.

The efforts to create heuristic teaching methods of the Korean style have competitively been made to achieve successes and hundreds of new teaching methods were generalized throughout the country.

This year, teaching contents of more than 380 subjects were put on a concrete, diverse and practical basis and latest scientific and technological achievements were included in major basic subjects and major subjects.

The university made and generalized videos of the actual lectures for hundreds of subjects including ultrashort wave engineering, thus making it possible for students of other universities to receive lectures of its excellent lecturers.

Strengthening of educational forces

Among the university’s officials, lecturers and researchers there are People's Scientists, Merited Scientists, academicians and candidate academicians. In the past decade, it has produced 155 professors, 485 PhDs and 578 associate professors.

Many lecturers and researchers of the university have become world-class scholars.

There are also those active as special members of international academic associations, and hundreds of lecturers and researchers have reached the first-rate scholar’s standard.

The number of the holders of academic degrees and titles has increased, and the number of the winners of the title of October 8 Model Teacher has more than trebled as compared to that ten years ago.

The winners of certificates of registration of new teaching methods, introduction of new teaching methods and registration of educational science achievements number a total of thousands.

Contributions made to economic development and improvement of people's living standards

The proud reality of the country, where the era of comprehensive development of socialism was ushered in, is greatly associated with the efforts of the lecturers, researchers and students of the university.

A research group of the Mathematics Faculty established a method of measuring the slag level in a scientific way in cooperation with the technical group of the Hwanghae Iron and Steel Complex.

The researchers of the Material Science Faculty and the High-Tech Research & Development Centre developed and introduced a technology for raising the coal combustion rate in the gas generator process of a fertilizer production base and a device capable of measuring the thickness of various kinds of pipelines and devices with high accuracy and thus contributed to increasing fertilizer production.

The research groups of the AI Faculty and others developed and introduced a system for increasing the accuracy of measuring the quantity of coal supply in large boilers and solved an urgent problem in ensuring the stability of boiler operation, thus making it possible to increase the production of electricity while reducing the consumption of coal.

Lecturers and researchers selected from several faculties and other units developed and introduced in a Korean way the integrated production system into the Sinpho City and Ragwon County offshore farms wonderfully built as the projects for the regional development policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea.

Lecturers and researchers of several faculties also developed an intelligent medical service system for city and county hospitals and are continuously updating its functions.

A research group of the Chemistry Faculty developed a fourth-generation propylene polymerization catalyst and established a polymerization catalyst production process based on domestic raw materials and technology at the Namhung Youth Chemical Complex.

The faculty also developed a voltammeter capable of rapidly and accurately analysing heavy metals, toxic elements and several other metallic elements in sample solutions and a flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer capable of making an ultramicro analysis of almost all metallic elements.

In addition, it invented ten kinds of advanced analytical equipment including a differential thermal analyser capable of analysing with high accuracy such thermal characteristic indexes as melting point, decomposition temperature and boiling point of macromolecular, organic and inorganic substances.

Scientists of the Physics Faculty and several other units succeeded in developing a quantum cryptographic communication device which can be used in optical fibre communication infrastructure.

Remarkable achievements made in field of social sciences

The History Faculty of the university wrote many books including the one of national treasure value which comprehensively deals with the 100-year history of the Korean revolution.

Lecturers and researchers of several faculties including the Economics Faculty also wrote and published hundreds of kinds of textbooks and reference books and thousands of scientific papers.

A creative group of the Faculty of Korean Linguistics created and completed the collections of lyrics of songs, students’ works and long real-life stories on the occasion of the 80th founding anniversary of the university, while the History Faculty made valuable research achievements enriching the historical and cultural heritage of the country.
