Pride grows among the residents of Paechon County in South Hwanghae Province, in which paddy fields occupy a large proportion of farm fields.

In the past, when visitors from other areas asked them what the sources of pride in Paechon County were, the inhabitants would answer that they only prided themselves on their high-quality rice with rich taste. At present, however, the county residents say they have too many sources of pride to tell about, so they don’t know what to say about first.

Today, their primary source of pride is the products of the newly built county foodstuff factory.

The factory started production less than a year ago and turned out 20-odd articles in13 kinds in the early days after inauguration, but now its products have increased to over 80 articles in 18 kinds, bringing great pleasure to residents.

“When children living in other areas visited my home previously, I could give them only a bag of rice. But now I can proudly give them lots of products made in our county,” said Kim Pong Nyo living in Paechon county town.

Paechon-brand products like such condiments as wheat paste, wheat sauce and peppered bean paste with garlic, confectionery and various drinks are so good in quality, nutritive value and taste that they have become widely known also to people in other areas and popular among them and therefore it has become difficult for the factory to meet the growing demand for its products.

Paechon people find their sources of pride also in their modern garment factory.

According to Manageress Yun Chun Wol, her factory’s products were very popular with visitors in the consumer goods exhibition held in South Hwanghae Province in early July and the factory received so large an order from the residents of Haeju City it had to arrange urgent transport three times.

A few days ago, the factory made working clothes to order from the agricultural workers of a farm and they liked them very much, said Yun proudly.

“As my physique is especially large, it took much pain to have my clothes made to suit my body. But now there is the modern garment factory I can go there anytime to order clothes to my liking,” said Kim Kwang Hak, a tractor driver of the Subok Farm in Paechon County.

“The monthly supplied wheat paste is so tasty that I have almost forgot the taste of the fermented soybean paste made at home previously. As I become free from cares about food and clothing, my gratitude at state benefits gets deeper,” he added.
