An Sol A, a pupil of Masan Primary School in Ryongsong District, Pyongyang, is a disabled girl.

Although she is now learning to her heart’s content like other pupils, she was at a crossroads of continuing to learn or not until a few years ago.

When she entered the school, she was much shorter than the other pupils of her age and could not walk properly. So it was the biggest challenge for her to go to and from school.

Her father was unable to take her to and from school as he could not even go to work because his lingering illness took a turn for the worse after her mother died.

He was so worried about the future of the daughter.

But his worry did not last long.

Yun Jong Hui, the girl’s class teacher, began to take her to and from school.

Although she could carry her either on her back or by bicycle, Yun always walked her holding her by the hand in order to help her overcome her physical handicap.

At the school, she made painstaking efforts to teach her whatever other pupils did, from how to hold a pencil to how to read and write Korean language, how to do drawing and handicraft and how to sing music. And after taking her back to her house, she took sincere care of her household affairs.

All the officials and teaching staff of the school, too, showed warm affection and made sincere efforts for her.

Her classmates volunteered to help the teacher and her, and even their parents took care of her life with parental affection.

Under such care, Sol A became able to go to school by herself and learn to her heart's content at the school.

A performance was given at the school on a holiday.

In the performance Sol A, together with her classmates, sang at the top of her voice, smiling brightly.

Listening to her singing, all the officials and teaching staff of the school and parents of the pupils wept tears.

“In our society, where it is a social climate to regard others’ pain as their own and help and lead one another forward, Sol A would have become able to walk by herself even without my help.

“Her smile is that of all of us. I will do my duty as an educator to bring her brighter smiles,” said Yun.
