September 16 is the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.

In December 1994 the UN General Assembly set September 16 as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the day in 1987 when the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer was adopted.

The ozone layer plays a role as a shield to protect all living things on the earth from ultraviolet radiation.

If it is damaged and ultraviolet rays of the sun directly reach the earth surface, people will suffer from various diseases. The ultraviolet rays, which negatively affect the heredity and immune system of living organisms, also hinder the growth of animals and plants and gravely endanger the marine ecosystem.

According to information available, ultraviolet radiation causes skin cancer and eye diseases like cataract, restrains the immune system and causes early aging.

The ozone layer, which is very beneficial to human life and the ecological environment of the earth like that, is being seriously destroyed for several reasons.

The theme of this year's International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is “Global action for a cooler planet”.

As the depletion of the ozone layer has a serious impact on climate change, the world has made constant efforts to cope with it.

While trying to ensure global reduction in the production and use of HFCs, potent greenhouse gases, it is accelerating the transition toward more efficient and sustainable cooling solutions.

In our country, too, efforts have been put into scientific research for environmental protection to bring about many achievements, including solving sci-tech problems arising in using refrigerant and introducing and generalizing advanced technologies conducive to the preservation of the ozone layer.

Over the past decade, the international community has developed renewable energy technology, strengthened industrial capacity and made innovations across the cooling sector, thus confirming that the development goals set by the Montreal Protocol can be achieved.

To preserve the ozone layer and lower the temperature of the planet is a vital issue for minimizing damage from disastrous weather and saving mankind from all kinds of natural disasters in recent years.

The ever-worsening climatic crisis is seriously affecting the regions and economy of different countries concerned, and the burden it imposes on society and the economy has reached the level of state emergency.

All countries should intensify actions for expanding the introduction of renewable energy and establish innovative industries to reduce the greenhouse effect.

It is a mission of mankind to preserve the ozone layer and lower the temperature of the planet.
