The extract of Ganoderma from the Ryongsong Koryo Medicine Pharmaceutical Factory was highly appreciated at the exhibition of products of Koryo medicine pharmaceutical factories-2025 held last year.

Kim Song Ju, worker of the factory, said to those who congratulated her that the medicine is the product of the strenuous efforts of her father, an honoured disabled ex-soldier.

Her father Kim Jong Yong had been suffering from a severe pain due to a fracture of the spine.

Jong Yong who had been leading an optimistic life like during his military service constantly sought the way to relieve the pain of his fellow patients and fully cure their illnesses.

Originally a writer, he became a pharmacist by setting himself the goal of developing an “elixir of life” for patients with incurable diseases.

As he worked at the then honoured disabled soldiers’ pharmaceutical factory in Maengsan County, he avidly read books on pharmacology to widen the horizons of his medical knowledge.

In the course of this, he paid attention to Ganoderma associated with so many legendary tales for its miraculous medicinal effects.

When he knew that organic germanium, the main component of Ganoderma, has an antioxidative effect three to six times that of insam, he thought up an idea that its extract might be a cure-all.

He set himself the study task and buckled down to research, but it was a very challenging job. He had to make spores, secure substrates and set up a process for growing mushrooms, obtain the extract of the mushroom, conduct an experiment and analysis of the extract and verify its medicinal effects.

He gradually declined in health due to acute systemic pains and paralysis, but continued his research by sheer willpower.

His research finally reached the stage of clinical experiment, but he passed away, leaving his last will that he had nothing to desire if his Ganoderma extract would contribute to the people’s health and treatment of diseases.

For over a decade since then, his daughter has worked hard to make greater successes in the cultivation of Ganoderma and the development and production of its extract.

The Ganoderma extract which is now being produced by an industrial method is widely used as not only a restorative but also a medicine since it strengthens the heart, improves blood circulation, promotes metabolism and cell regeneration, effectively treats various diseases including bronchial asthma, silicosis, liver and skin diseases and thyropathy and has a strong inhibitory effect on cancer cells.
