A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry at a press conference on August 28 answered a question put by a journalist as regards the poisonous gas warfare committed by the Japanese aggressor forces in China in the past.

During the Second World War Japan researched, made and used chemical weapons on a large scale in China and other Asian countries, he said, adding that the Japanese aggressor forces used them on more than 2 000 occasions in the Chinese territory alone to kill or injure over 200 000 Chinese soldiers and people.

More than 2 000 people have been killed or injured by the chemical weapons left by Japan in China since its defeat and the life and security of the Chinese people and the regional ecological environment are under serious threat, he said.

Although there is clear evidence about those unethical crimes, the right-wing forces of Japan have unexpectedly distorted history, letting loose sophism that the chemical weapons “become harmless of their own accord” and “the statute of limitations already expired”, he denounced.

To remove the serious perils of the chemical weapons left by Japan in the past is a historical responsibility and international legal obligation that the Japanese authorities cannot avoid but should surely bear, he said, stressing that China strongly demands they speed up the process of disposing of the chemical weapons and thus give clean land back to the Chinese people as early as possible.
