Rich resources for scenery-based therapy
August 23, 2026With people’s demand for health and longevity increasing, their interest grows in the resources for treatment based on scenery.
The effective use of such resources can produce good results in prevention and treatment of disorders of nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory and other systems.
The resources include such scenic places and spots as mountains, rivers, seas and lakes, natural phenomena according to seasons and flora and fauna.
The DPRK is rich in the resources as the most part of it is mountainous, the mountains, fields, seas and rivers blend in well with each other, the climate is moderate and seasons are distinctive.
In the area of Mt Paektu registered as a global geopark, there are the mountain standing majestically with high peaks on, mysterious Lake Chon and primitive forests.
The area has lots of natural elements that formed in the process of several rounds of volcanic eruptions and evolutionary process. They include the geology and topography related to volcanic eruptions, the flora and fauna adapting to the natural environment in the alpine area, the hydrological regime originating from Lake Chon and the soil that formed in correlation with the spouting of pumice and alpine plants. Those elements cannot be found in other areas of the country.
Mt Kumgang is also an ideal place for scenery-based therapy. It boasts high peaks and fantastic rocks, huge rocky cliffs, deep valleys, waterfalls and ponds, crystal-clear streams flowing through valleys and rich biodiversity.
A very rare complex of scenic beauties in terms of diversity, abundance and aesthetics, the mountain has beauties of mountain, valley, lake, sea and seashore and commands distant view as well.
On top of Piro Peak, the highest peak of Mt Kumgang, you can command a bird’s-eye view of peaks, valleys, lakes and the sea in the area. The sunrise on the East Sea of Korea and the sunset over the mountain are the most spectacular sights you can enjoy on the peak.
Mts Myohyang, Kuwol and Chilbo also have a harmonious combination of thick woods, mysteriously-shaped stiff cliffs, the chirping of mountain birds and magnificent waterfalls where water looks like beads rolling down from the sky.
Moran Hill and Mts Taesong and Ryongak in the capital city of Pyongyang and Mts Suyang and Jangsu in South Hwanghae Province boast their unique features and beautiful scenery, and Sinphyong Kumgang in North Hwanghae Province, which is called a small Mt Kumgang, also shows off the spectacular scenes of Kuryong Valley, Rojok Rock, Pidan Falls and others.
Meanwhile, such natural water areas as Lake Samji, Lagoon Samil and Lake Sijung and such underground caves like Ryongmun Cavern and Songam Cave are also resources for scenery-based therapy.
The coastal scenery also constitutes a good resource for scenery-based therapy in the DPRK.
On the east coast there are Myongsasimni with the sandy beach extending for four kilometres, Chongsokjong famous as Thongchon Kumgang and other scenic spots like Songdowon, Majon and Songdan and on the west coast are such scenic attractions as Monggumpho, Waudo and Ryongsupho covered with white sand.
Bases for medical treatment and cultural and leisure activities have been built at scenic spots in different parts of the country to positively contribute to improving the health of working people.
