Russia rejects Japanese authorities’ claim for dominium over Southern Kurils
August 18, 2026The Russian government reproached the Japanese authorities for their dishonest attitude to President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Southern Kurils.
On August 13, the Japanese foreign minister said to the Russian ambassador to Japan that the “northern territories” are “inherent part of Japan’s territory over which it has dominion” and that the Russian President’s visit to the islands would have a negative effect on the Japan-Russia relations.
In this regard, the Russian ambassador noted that the Southern Kurils are an inseparable part of the Russian territory and the president’s visit to his country’s territory is a sovereign decision and does not need to be discussed with other countries.
Alexander Grushko, Russian vice-minister of Foreign Affairs, said that Russian land will remain as Russia’s despite the “ardour” of Japan.
The chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the State Duma of Russia stressed that Japan will be well advised not to forget its history instead of looking over other’s land.
