Many sets of triplets and other multiple children have been born at the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital since it was inaugurated in July 1980.

In the DPRK pregnant women are placed under the care of the state from the moment when they are diagnosed as being pregnant with multiple children.

They are admitted to the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital and provided with a variety of nutritious foods and tonics as well as medical service at the state’s expense.

“What is important in the health care of women in multiple pregnancy is that of unborn babies and pregnant women,” said Ham Sun Hui, head of obstetrics department No. 2 of the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital. “It is the duty of my department to ensure the safe delivery of unborn babies as the constitution, nutritive and other conditions of pregnant women are different from each other and help the pregnant women recover their health properly.”

Health workers of her department made unremitting efforts to further improve the health care of women in multiple pregnancy.

It was not an easy job to find a new method of helping pregnant women give an easy birth to multiple children by putting the health care and medical treatment of them on a more scientific basis and systematize it.

They had to select the treatment methods and introduce appropriate medications according to the health conditions of pregnant women while keeping the health of unborn babies in peak conditions, and expect the complications which would most likely occur among pregnant women during surgical operations and adopt effective measures.

They worked day and night, intensifying medical treatment and scientific research to this end.

In the course of it, they came to a conclusion that they need to extend the perinatal period in order to help pregnant women give birth to healthy multiple children and, accordingly, medical treatment and nourishment of them should be put on a scientific footing.

Thanks to their efforts, a new health care method of women in multiple pregnancy, a cure for hypocalcemia and several other advanced treatment methods were developed and introduced into practice.

On the basis of these achievements, the department succeeded in the quintuplet delivery for the first time in the country last year and restored their mother, who was in a critical condition due to various complications, to health.

Medical workers of obstetrics department No. 2 continue to strive for the restoration of health of women in multiple pregnancy.
