Residents feel proud of their own efforts
August 5, 2026A new resting place was built in Chilgol-dong No. 3 of Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang.
The passers-by take pleasure in dropping by the resting place as it is in a busy place.
“The residents are very enthusiastic to keep their village neat and tidy. It is also an expression of their patriotic spirit, I think,” said an old man.
In the resting place a fence and slide were built in the shape of a flower blossom by taking advantage of the natural features of the area and spaces without using expensive materials and an open space was created by cutting the slope and then widened enough for visitors to do exercise and have a dance. Visitors can see at a glance the sincere efforts the villagers put into it.
It was this spring that the officials of Chilgol-dong No. 3 decided to build a new resting place.
At that time, all the residents were surprised to see its new master plan.
The officials of the dong office called upon them to build a wonderful resting place by themselves so that the old people and children can rest and play to their heart’s content and the passers-by will be provided with convenience. And all the residents eagerly responded to their call.
“Of course, drawing up a master plan and translating it into reality are two different things. But we solved knotty problems with the residents one by one,” said O Yong Sim, head of Neighbourhood Unit No. 12.
Many residents unsparingly donated money they had saved for their own families.
“Each time the officials of the dong office and heads of neighbourhood units dissuaded them, they insisted on donating, saying, ‘Then we cannot use this resting place.’ And on rest days they volunteered to help the construction, saying they could not sit idle when the rest place was being built for them,” said O Yong Sim.
Residents in one neighbourhood unit invited an artist to draw a splendid picture when the fence was completed, and those in another neighbourhood unit prepared good species of trees and beautiful flowers with the help of an expert to create a fine landscape.
Such joint efforts of the residents resulted in the construction of a splendid resting place, where a municipal demonstration was held in June.
“Playing yut, Korean chess, volleyball and badminton games between neighbourhood units and having a merry dance in the resting place on rest days and holidays, the residents feel proud of their efforts,” said O Yong Sim.
