KCNA commentary on US’ moves to transform USFJ into ‘war command’

August 1, 2026

The US is adding a new element of strategic instability to the Korean peninsula and the Asia-Pacific region, bringing dark clouds of war.

The commander of the US forces in Japan in an interview with a Japanese newspaper on July 26 bragged that over 200 personnel had been added to the USFJ headquarters to give it more authority, it enabled the USFJ to make a rapid response, which had been impossible previously, and the USFJ has the number of personnel that can sustain 24-7 operations across all combat functions.

He also noted that he will make sure the USFJ gets as ready as possible with Japan, anticipating not the possibility but the time of a crisis to occur in the Asia-Pacific region.

This is part of the plan to transform the command of the USFJ, which had been mainly responsible for the administrative missions including the administration of the Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement in the past, into a unified military command with substantial operational command authority. And it proves that the command of the USFJ is transforming itself into a real "war command" to command the US forces and all the armed forces of vassal states in the region.

It is known to the public that the US has been pushing ahead with the reorganization of the US forces in Japan since last year to set up a unified military command and give it some of operational command authority of the US Pacific Command in Hawaii.

The main core of the three-stage reorganization of the US forces in Japan is to make it possible for the US and Japan to carry out a joint operation in emergency by unifying the commanding systems of Japan's "integrated operation command", which was formed in March last year to control the Ground, Maritime and Air "Self-Defense Forces", and the US forces in Japan.

Through its moves, the US aims to further strengthen its overseas aggression forces into the field forces possessed of independent wartime operational capability. But, most importantly, it seeks a sinister intention to use the Japanese "Self-Defense Forces" as a shock brigade and main combat force for an all-out war in the Asia-Pacific region in emergency.

The US already announced that Japan would stand at the forefront of all contingencies that the US may face in the West Pacific region, when it started to reorganize the command of the US forces in Japan last year.

Opposition parties and the public across Japan have continued to voice their concern that the SDF would come under the control of the US forces.

Given that the core reinforcements to be dispatched to the ROK first would be the US forces in Japan in time of contingency on the Korean peninsula, it is undeniable that the first target of this "war command" is just the DPRK.

As the enemies have admitted, a physical conflict on the Korean peninsula at present is a matter of time when it will break out, rather than a matter of possibility whether or not it will occur.

Shortly ago, the US conducted the largest-ever "Combined Joint Sustainment Training" together with the ROK puppet military gangsters to enhance the capabilities for protracted war in the operational theatre of the Korean peninsula. And it held a meeting of the chairpersons of the US-Japan-ROK joint chiefs of staff to call again for strengthening "tripartite security cooperation" including the continuation of the multi-domain joint military exercises "Freedom Edge".

Such adventurous military manoeuvres of the US hell-bent on securing large-scale offensive forces and long-term high-intensity operational capabilities while clearly exposing its invariable hostile intention to confront the DPRK to the end are pushing the latter again to the irreversible final conclusion that it should further strive for uninterrupted development and evolution of its nuclear war deterrent for self-defence.

The US Far East Command, which had been stationed in Japan to superintend the Korean war, came to a tragic end, earning such brand as "defeated command".

The transformation of the command of the US forces in Japan into a "war command" means being reduced directly to a disgraceful “defeated command”.
