Illegal surveillance of civilians by the military decried in Japan

July 31, 2026

A Japanese newspaper recently disclosed that the Ground Self-Defense Force conducted surveillance while secretly collecting private information of civilians.

It said that although the Ground SDF set up long ago an intelligence organization, whose mission is to gather overseas information, with 50 to 60 persons, it collected personal information of thousands of civilians including professors at home.

The personal information pieces collected by the organization reportedly included not only those on property, debt and ways of life but also those on the attitude towards the Japanese authorities and the SDF and ideological tendency.

Japanese citizens are growing indignant at the SDF’s illegal surveillance violating human rights.
