Plant resources on increase

The Central Botanical Garden pays much attention to increasing the plant resources.

Its plant management department made a detailed survey of the plants unavailable there or known as endangered species on the basis of their success in creating unique landscapes in its different plant sections in the past.

Tens of rare and endangered species of trees and over a dozen species of medicinal herbs were collected from different regions, including Ryanggang, North and South Hamgyong and Kangwon provinces, to be rooted in the botanical garden.

Besides, the botanical garden cultivates trees needed for creating economic and oil-bearing forests across the country according to the Workers’ Party of Korea’s regional development policy.

It also breeds and cultivates flowering plants of high ornamental value needed for decorating streets and villages and spreads them.

In the course of this, it has put plant cultivation methods on a more scientific footing.

For example, it chose rose varieties fit for soilless cultivation and scientifically clarified the methods of making and applying nutrient solutions according to varieties and solved technical problems arising in making Lilium hybridium and roses bloom in winter.

In addition, it newly bred a variety of petunia which is brighter in flower colour and smaller in height to be good for flower beds than the local breed and whose flowers are 2-3cm bigger than those of the latter, registered it as a national variety and introduced it in different parts of the country.
