Workplace in ‘park’

July 10, 2026

The compound of the Pyongyang Condiments Factory is not so big.

But every visitor to the factory is struck with admiration at the sight of its buildings surrounded by groves and flowers.

In the compound and along the fence there grow over 4 000 trees in over 60 species, including zelkova tree, spruce, juniper and metasequoia, some 800 roses in over a dozen species and over 120 fruit trees, including peach, apricot and persimmon trees.

According to Kim Ran Hui, keeper of the factory’s greenhouse, all the officials and employees take part in the landscaping of the factory.

The green area created by them has reached over 13 000 square metres.

In front of the Puhung Leisure Complex fully equipped with cultural and welfare facilities there are a variety of flowers, including beautiful roses, in full bloom and different species of tall trees and shrubs, including elm, Japanese barberry and Korean box tree, and flowering plants form a distinctive landscape.

At lunchtime and during a break employees of each workshop spend a good time having a rest or playing amusement games in their landscaped resting place.

The yard of the factory’s nursery is reminiscent of a flower garden in a fairy tale.

It serves as a good playground for children as it has a colourful arch-style resting place harmoniously adorned by a waterfall and climbing roses.

The employees of the factory affectionately call it their workplace in a “park” landscaped with various kinds of trees and ground-cover plants.
