Fish farming and aquaculture, main direction for development of fisheries
July 6, 2026Today when abnormal climate deteriorates with the passage of time, fish farming and aquaculture have become the main direction for the development of fisheries in the production of aquatic products.
Our country is bounded by the sea on two sides of the east and west and has many rivers and lakes, providing favourable conditions for revitalizing fish farming and aquaculture.
According to the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea on the development of fisheries which calls for promoting fish farming and aquaculture on a large scale, the Sinpho City Offshore Farm and the Ragwon County Offshore Farm have been built as the models of offshore farming in the new era and modern marine industry bases in the country in recent years.
These are the foundation for the development of all the coastal areas of the country in a unique style.
The Sinpho City Offshore Farm obtained far higher per-hectare production results than before from the first scallop harvest this year.
Learning from the good experience gained in offshore culture in the coastal cities and counties, it has selected right species for mixed aquaculture suited to the ecological features of the relevant waters and widely applied various methods of mixed culture such as three-dimensional and sectional culture and that between rafts and on seed-ropes to boost production.
Provinces with coastal cities and counties are now building modern offshore farms on the principle of optimization according to the yearly plans. In particular, they direct positive efforts to increasing the production of marine products by doing the mixed culture of seaweed, kelp, mussels and others scientifically.
Freshwater fish farming also gains momentum across the country.
In order to turn rivers, lakes and reservoirs into large natural fish farms, relevant regions work to increase fry production and stock them with fries and widely apply the cage-net fish farming method.
And all cities and counties have put in a great deal of effort to do fish farming in paddies, which proved advantageous, scientifically and extensively and increase the output of both grain crops and fish, thereby improving the living standards of the regional people.
Scientific research institutes intensify scientific research to develop new fish farming and aquaculture techniques while establishing a system of breeding and preserving good varieties for fish farming and aquaculture and disseminating them to relevant units.
All these facts prove the validity of the WPK’s policy which set fish farming and aquaculture as the main direction of the development of the fishing industry.
