Gardeners of new streets

June 14, 2026

New streets in the Hwasong area are now decorated with beautiful flowers.

Flowering shrubs in bloom, green leafy trees and village greens in the Hwasong area, in which high and low buildings are distributed in a harmonious way with the broad and open roads as the axis and modernity and national identity are well combined artistically with the mixture of buildings of the Korean architectural style, not only look attractive but also provide the people with spaces for leisure activities.

“As most of the buildings are painted in deep colours, they look gentle and dignified. But with the change of season beautiful flowers bloom and the lawns and street trees turn green, creating another spectacle in the Hwasong area,” said an old man who, with his wife, does morning and evening walks and has a rest at the thickly wooded parks like those in forests.

Such a beauty was never created of its own accord.

The employees of the Hwasong District Horticultural Station rack their brains to show fresh and beautiful sights in the area. And they feel proud and happy when the residents are pleased to see the beautiful scenes they created.

Kim Myong Gun, a landscape architect who came to the district horticultural station from other district, said he wanted to improve the landscape of the new streets with his knowledge and techniques.

Such a desire is stronger among the residents who moved into new houses in the Hwasong area.

Kim Yu Rim volunteered to work at the horticultural station as she wanted to beautifully decorate the wonderful street, in which ordinary working people like her are owners of new houses. She said that she could still vividly remember the excitement and joy she felt the day when she moved into her new house.

According to her colleagues, she worked hard without having a rest. Then she said: “I do not mind the rain nor the scorching rays of the sun. Instead, I am happy to think that the flowering shrubs and trees I cultivate would grow stronger when it rains and that the flowers become more beautiful and the trees greener under the warm sun.”

Even though they are busy planting and cultivating lots of plants, they share experience during breaks and hold study sessions of new techniques at their leisure time.

According to Kim Myong Gun, many employees acquired extensive knowledge and presented lots of new ideas to improve the landscape in the district in a few years after the establishment of the station.

“I often ponder the meaning of ‘master’ these days,” said Cha Sun Hwa, another employee who moved into a new flat in Hwasong Street. “I cannot see even a tree and a blade of grass carelessly. The consciousness of being a master has changed many things.”
