The chairman of the Commission of the African Union called for peace and unity of the continent as he addressed an event held to mark the Day of Africa on May 25.

Recalling the sufferings experienced by the Africans during the past colonial rule, he said that they regained their freedom and dignity by fighting against the cruel treatment by colonial powers and have strengthened unity and solidarity as a continent-wide movement.

He stressed that the African countries should strive to build a peaceful and prosperous continent by their united efforts.
