Public health emergency declared in Africa
May 25, 2026The African centre for disease control and prevention declared a state of public health emergency on May 18 in connection with the spread of an Ebola variant virus in African countries.
Expressing concern over the increasing loss of life due to the Ebola variant in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, the centre warned of a high risk of its spread since there is no particular vaccine to control it.
The centre asserted that the declaration of this public health emergency will help strengthen regional cooperation and mobilize resources for emergency and enable neighbouring countries prone to contagion to get prepared for combatting the disease.
The centre’s emergency response teams have reportedly been dispatched to relevant regions to support the epidemic prevention efforts.
The African Union will give positive support to the centre, the chairman of the AU Commission said on the same day, and called on all nations in the continent to strengthen their support to the preparedness, observation and rapid response efforts in the countries which are suffering from the epidemic or are in danger of contagion.
