Newly registered living monument—Rungnado ginkgo
May 15, 2026The Rungnado ginkgo grows on picturesque Rungna Islet in the Taedong River in Pyongyang.
The tree, which has grown for hundreds of years, does not fruit as it is a staminate one.
The tree is 4.4 metres round at the root neck and stretches out its first branches at the height of about two metres. Upwards, 20-odd thick branches spread out to form a broom-shaped crown.
The tree is 23 metres tall, and the crown is 22 metres wide from east to west and 21 metres from north to south. It is imposing as it has a great growing force as compared to other ginkgo trees.
The tree growing on the islet in the Taedong River which meanders around Moran Hill, a pride of Pyongyang, adds beauty to the islet.
The tree growing on the plain islet has recently been registered as a living monument as it is of great ornamental value and significance in solving academic problems.
