Mothers’ wish

May 12, 2026

In April every year, graduates of senior middle schools throughout the country leave the schools full of hope. Many of them opt to join the army for national defence, regarding it as the most vivid expression of patriotism.

Mothers actively encourage their children to think of the country before their hopes.

Kim Song Hui, worker at the Taesongsan Amusement Facility Management Station, is a mother with only one son. Whenever she heard her son’s teachers praising him for studying well, she visualized him becoming a university student. Their neighbours frequently said that he would go to university.

However, when her son told her he would volunteer to join the People’s Army together with his classmates, Song Hui positively supported his determination without hesitation. Because she knows that only when the socialist country is strong can his future and talent be ensured.

Little different from her feelings are those of Jon Un Bok, worker at the Moranbong Lift Operation Management Station who has just sent her daughter to an army post after sending her son to a post for national defence some years ago.

Her husband is a patriotic martyr who sacrificed himself on the road of national defence. It was her desire to send her children to posts for national defence to follow in their father’s footsteps.

She was glad and happy now that her children all grew up and read her mind.

Pak Un Hye, a woman living in Pothonggang District, Pyongyang, said she wrote in the pocketbook of her son who will soon leave for a post for national defence the poems and songs on the hometown and the country. Then she told what happened before his graduation from senior middle school.

One day, back home from school, her son said to her and his father that his teacher had told them to write about their desires. Then he asked his parents about their intention. His mother said, “If you join the army for national defence, I will regard it as a pride.”

His father Jong Kwang Ho, who is an official of the Ministry of Land and Maritime Transport, told him about the preceding generations who defended the country at the cost of their lives and repeatedly asked him to become an admirable son of the country like them.

Behind good children are always good mothers.
