Living monument―Flying squirrel of Mt Myohyang

April 1, 2026

Flying squirrels of Mt Myohyang live in various types of thick forests in the areas from lowlands to highlands rising over 1 000 metres above sea level.

The body is 15 to 20cm long and the tail is 10 to 15cm long.

They are similar to ordinary squirrels in appearance and size, but they have hairy membranes between forelegs and hind legs.

They live in the holes on hollowed trees or those made in tree trunks by woodpeckers. They are hardly seen during the day as they are active mainly in the evening and at night.

They move from place to place by gliding from the top of trees with four legs spread to both sides while adjusting the direction with the tail.

They have the habit of storing food for winter and do not hibernate.

A female breeds once a year and produces a litter of four or five babies.

Flying squirrels of Mt Myohyang are under good protection as an indigenous animal subspecies of the DPRK.
