There are many flower-growing families on Pyongyang’s Ryomyong Street, which exudes the charm of fresh and beautiful roof greening.

Among them is the family of old man Song Yong Chol.

Their flat is filled with the fresh scent of flowers in all seasons.

According to Kim Son Bi, the wife of Song Yong Chol, the family started to grow many flowers after they moved into the new flat on the new street.

Looking at the flower beds covered with beautiful flowers on the new street while strolling through it, the old couple felt a sudden impulse to grow flowers by themselves. So they enhanced their common knowledge about cultivation of flowering plants while frequently helping flower growers with their work and soon began to cultivate flowering plants at their home.

Looking at the flowers they had grown, the couple felt pleasure as if they were young again. Thus they have so far cultivated flowers for nearly a decade.

They often had a talk with horticulturists and flower enthusiasts and read books on the cultivation of flowering plants, thus gaining the knacks of their own in cultivating flower plants at their home.

It is said that a lot of flowering plants cultivated by them were transplanted in flower beds to contribute to decorating the street.

Acquaintances of theirs call them the “couple of horticulturists”. When people visit them to acquire the knack of cultivating flowering plants, they sincerely give them advice and young flowering plants and flower seeds as well.

The “couple of horticulturists” find pleasure in seeing beautiful flowers blooming by the windows and on the balconies of flats of increasing flower enthusiasts

The cultivation of flowering plants is quite effective for mental stability, Song Yong Chol said, adding, “I feel more pleased to think that we are doing what is beneficial to people and society.”
