Wisteria of Mt Taesong, living monument
March 28, 2026Wisteria of Mt Taesong grows in the Central Botanical Garden in Pyongyang.
In the spring of 1961 when it was 20 years old, the tree was transplanted in the botanical garden.
At the height of two metres the main trunk divides into eight thick boughs spreading in all directions while twining around the shelf.
The tree is 3.5m round at the root neck and the crown is 276 square metres in area.
Lovely flowers bloom on the tree in May and June and its pod fruits ripen in autumn. A large fruit is 13.7cm long.
As the oldest large tree of its kind, the wisteria is of academic significance, and it is a precious living monument as the ornate flowers drooping to the bottoms of the trunk and shelf add beauty to the botanical garden.
