March 17, 2026 The inauguration ceremony of Saeppyol Street took place with splendour in the presence of the respected
The street was built by the state with great efforts in order to hand down to posterity the feats of the war heroes who unhesitatingly sacrificed their lives for the honour and eternal prosperity of the country in the overseas military operations and take care of their bereaved families.
A ceremony was held at the headquarters building of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea on August 21 last year to confer state commendations on the commanding officers and combatants of the overseas operations units of the Korean People’s Army, in the presence of the respected General Secretary
The General Secretary pinned the Hero Medal beside each of the portraits of the martyrs who laid down their precious lives to carry out the order of the country in the overseas military operations and gave a warm hug to the commanding officers and combatants who returned home.
Looking up to the image of the General Secretary, who shared the pain of loss together with the bereaved families, the people throughout the country shed tears of strong emotion.
A few days later, he met the bereaved families again, gave them the portraits of the martyrs covered with the national flag of the DPRK and had a photo taken with them.
That day, he told them that a new street would be built for the bereaved families of the service personnel of the overseas operations units in Taesong District of Pyongyang and it was planned to be named Saeppyol Street in praise of their feats shining like stars and that the remains of the martyrs would be buried in the best place of the arboretum in front of it and a monument to their immortal combat feats erected in memory of the great combatants.
That day, he called the leading officials of revolutionary schools and asked them to train the children of the martyrs well to be the hardcore of the revolution and true sons and daughters of the country.
Later, he gave meticulous guidance on the whole course of the construction to ensure that every element of the structures to be built in the street would reflect the heartfelt sincerity the country shows for the relatives of the war martyrs.
As a result, Saeppyol Street sprang up several months afterwards in the Hwasong area of Pyongyang, taking on a majestic appearance peculiar to it.
In his speech at the inauguration ceremony of Saeppyol Street the General Secretary said that the new street has been built thanks to the ardent desire of our motherland that wishes that the precious lives of its excellent sons, who defended the most sacred things by sacrificing their most valuable things, will live forever and it is waiting for the moment when it will greet its honoured owners, adding he hoped that this street, a place where the ennobling souls rest and reverence from all over the country converges, will always brim over with joy and happiness.
That day he visited the house of Kim Jong Ok, widow of martyr O Thae Chol, looked round its rooms and kitchen and said that she would miss her husband more than ever before in the new house and he hoped that she would overcome her sorrow as early as possible and lead a happy life. And he wished her son studying at Mangyongdae Revolutionary School a bright future, saying that he should become an excellent person like his father.
