February 28, 2026

Mugi Islet, located in Sonchon County of North Phyongan Province, is the place where white herons with yellow bills breed in groups from early May to mid-June every year before leaving for their wintering places in mid-September.

The islet is 750m long, 200m wide, 1 200m round, 70m high and 0.16 square kilometres in area.

Wormwood and some shrubs grow on the islet and rocks are covered with moss.

In around May, the herons and other seabirds come to the islet to build loose nests with dead twigs on hornbeam branches or below wormwood bushes and the females lay three to five eggs there respectively.

The breeding place of the white herons with yellow bills on Mugi Islet is under protection as a place of significance in terms of scenic beauty and ecological study.
