The 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union was held at the headquarters of the AU in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 14 and 15, on the theme of “Guarantee for sustainable use of water and safe hygienic system to attain the goal of the agenda of 2063”.

The meeting discussed the issue of sustainable water management in the African continent and that of efforts for peace, political stability and economic development in the region, regional integration, the enhancement of Africa’s position in the world and the strengthening of its unity.

At the meeting the Burundian president was elected as chairman of the AU for 2026.
