Attention has been focused on the fact that highlighted once again the significance of the issue of improving the educational level, conditions and environment.

The university admission rate increased among students from flood-afflicted areas (North Phyongan, Jagang and Ryanggang provinces) who received good education in Pyongyang last year.

According to the measures taken by the Workers' Party of Korea at the time, adequate conditions were provided for the education, nursing and upbringing, living and rest, recuperation and treatment of the children, students and residents from the afflicted areas at the April 25 Hotel in Pyongyang and the military parade training centre. The students received a high level of education from the excellent teachers in Pyongyang for 130 days.

According to information available, dozens of students from senior middle schools in flood afflicted areas of North Phyongan Province entered universities. In particular, more than 10 students from Hadan Senior Middle School No. 1 in Sinuiju City entered universities.

Fourteen students enrolled at universities in Jagang Province.

Similar is the case with Ryanggang Province.

An official of Sinuiju Teachers Training College said that previously Uiju County took last place among the counties of North Phyongan Province on analysis of new students' ability, but this year the precedent has been broken.

As to such achievement an official of the Ministry of Education said that he keenly realized once again that the importance of education and the validity and vitality of the Workers’ Party of Korea's idea of attaching importance to education that education of the rising generation should not be suspended or neglected even for a moment, however difficult it may be.

He added that good education has an important effect not only on the intellectual growth of students but also on the formation of their world outlook, stressing that nearly half of the university students who enrolled at universities had applied for teachers training universities, true to the intention of the Party, and many students volunteered to join the army for national defence out of the sheer desire for requital, though they could successfully go to universities.

Ri Hyon, director of the Central Teachers Training Centre, said that though students from flood-stricken areas studied in Pyongyang for only 130 days, he realized once again the importance of improving the educational conditions and environment and came to be aware that a revolution in education is, in essence, a radical improvement in the qualifications of teachers.
