The Russian Foreign Ministry on April 17 made public a press release to condemn Japan for aggravating military tension.

Russia vehemently protested to the Japanese government against the Ground Self-Defense Force’s scheme to stage a drill for launching a ground-to-ship missile with a 200km range in Hokkaido near the Russian border in June, it said.

It stressed that Russia regards such a provocative military action as a potential threat to national security and can never put up with it.

The action of Japan is escalating the tension in Northeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, it said, warning that Russia has the right to take all necessary countermeasures to eliminate security threats.
