‘Myongsasimni' on the banks of the Amnok River

April 16, 2025

Myongsasimni refers to the beautiful landscape of the sandy beach on the Kalma peninsula, a scenic spot on the East Sea of Korea. It has become more famous as a large-scale coastal tourist area was built there in a distinctive style.

Such “Myongsasimni” has also come into being on the banks of the Amnok River.

The area consists of some islands in the lower reaches of the river in North Phyongan Province. The area, which was hit by severe flood in July last year, underwent a sea change in a little more than 130 days to turn into a wonderful modern rural town.

The natural landscape along the river and the different types of building groups remind viewers of the scenes of the Kalma Coastal Resort.

The new scenery of the Amnok riverside, reflecting a “modern rural town” boasting unique architectural beauty around the islets, can be called a spectacle in the border city of Sinuiju.

As for Wihwa Island in the northwestern tip of the country alone, it had long been subject to natural disaster and had been in a remote, isolated area where only sand dust rose in the wind blowing from the river. After a flood hit it last year, the area was totally flooded and severely damaged.

But today it has turned into a charming urbanized island, a civilized island town.

Hadan-ri is also attractive in both distant and close views, as there stand in rows apartment houses for thousands of families along the edges of the island extending for some kilometres.

The houses, which are harmoniously painted in graceful and dignified colours, resemble beautiful villas for their unique features. And at night, the area is as bright as day thanks to the refined illuminations retaining the features peculiar to the countryside.

As advanced urban civilization has been spread not only to Wihwa Island but also to Taji, Ojok and other islands around Uiju County and the city of Sinuiju, all traces of natural disaster and backwardness of the rural area have been removed to give way to enchanting views to be envied by the world.

Today the area of the lower reaches of the Amnok River is undergoing a change on a larger scale.

Along with construction of flourishing living space in Hadan-ri, construction projects kick-started on Wihwa and Taji islands for a largest scale greenhouse farm and vegetable science research centre.

And when a vegetable processing factory, storage facility, dwelling houses for hundreds of families, hostel and welfare service amenities are added, the island area will turn into a new model of regional development with great potentials for development, a green, splendid island of vitality and a leading scenic spot of the DPRK.
