Japanese governor vents discontent over govt’s conduct
March 25, 2025The Okinawa governor expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s behaviour on the issue of the US military base at his recent talk with the chief of the Cabinet Secretariat.
He said that though 80 years have passed since the end of the war, the concentration of US military bases in the prefecture has a great impact on the living of the local people and heavy burdens are continuously imposed on them.
He urged the US side to take effective measures in connection with the successive sexual abuses by US troops.
He also expressed his stand against the deployment of long-range missiles for “counterattack capability” (enemy base attack capability) within the prefecture, asserting that if the deployment is planned in the future, there will be an increased burden for keeping the base and a danger of becoming a target of attack.
