Myongsasipri—world-class scenic spot
March 6, 2025The DPRK bounded by the sea on the east and west sides has many world-famous seaside scenic spots.
Especially, Myongsasipri located in the Kalma peninsula on the east coast of the country is considered the acme of seaside scenic beauty.
The peninsula extends from the southern part of Wonsan Bay in the middle of the shore of the East Sea of Korea.
The six-kilometre-long peninsula with an average width of one kilometre was formed as the land and an island was connected by the gradual accumulation of sand carried by the Namdae stream and the sea.
To the north of the peninsula lies the Hodo peninsula which sticks out long towards it with several islands in between.
Pines, oaks and other species of trees grow on the peninsula, especially golden rain trees which are rarely seen in the east coastal areas.
The coastline around the peninsula is generally flat, along which lies a long sandy bank.
This is Myongsasipri, a famous scenic spot in the east coastal area.
The sandbank on the shore of the Kalma peninsula looks unusually bright and extends for ten ri or 4 kilometres, hence the name.
The white sandy beach, red sweet briars, green pine trees and clear waves of the East Sea rolling all the year round blend in with each other to form the picturesque beauty of Myongsasipri which is well known not only in the DPRK but also in other countries.
A large-scale distinctive coastal tourist resort has been built in Myongsasipri on the Kalma peninsula, a world-class seaside scenic spot.
Thanks to the idea and guidance of the Workers’ Party of Korea on building special tourist resorts on scenic beaches by taking advantage of the natural and geographical features of the maritime country to satisfy the people’s demand for culture and leisure, many hotels, sea bathing service facilities, various kinds of sports and recreation facilities and commercial and public catering amenities have been built in Myongsasipri to form an attractive landscape.
In the daytime, the buildings in unique architectural styles create a beautiful sight in harmony with the natural landscape and, in the evening, the enchanting illuminations add charm to the seaside scenery peculiar to Myongsasipri which has been well known from olden times.
