National living monument Phungsan dog
February 13, 2025Phungsan dog is a famous dog indigenous to the DPRK.
The special dog breed originated in Kim Hyong Gwon County (formerly Phungsan County) in Ryanggang Province. Native to the DPRK, it embodies the spirit of the Korean nation.
Phungsan dog is very clever and usually gentle in temperament. It is faithful to its master who keeps it, but very fierce to its opponents. Though small in size as compared with Western dogs, it is very swift and persistent and fights against any beasts to the last without flinching.
Many tales are told about Phungsan dogs that did righteous jobs for their masters.
Phungsan dog was registered as national living monument No. 368 in April 1956. In 2014, it was designated as the national dog representing the country and nation and, in 2022, the Phungsan dog culture was registered as national intangible cultural heritage element No. 120.
In the DPRK, Phungsan dog keeps its pure breed and preserves its distinctive features amid the love of the people, while various social activities are briskly conducted for the protection and proliferation of purebred Phungsan dog.
