Mexico, Canada take retaliatory tariff measure against US
February 6, 2025On February 1 the Mexican president ordered a retaliatory tariff measure against the US.
In an article posted on SNS, he branded and rejected as slander the US administration’s decision to impose tariffs on Mexican goods, linking a group of drug-related criminals to the Mexican government.
Mexico pursued dialogue, not confrontation, with the US, but has been compelled to cope with the latter’s measure, he said.
Reuters referred to Mexico’s measure as a response to the US’ decision to impose tariffs on all goods from Mexico and as the beginning of a trade war between the two countries.
On the same day the Canadian prime minister said that his country would impose a 25 percent tariff on all American goods to retaliate against the US’ new tariff measure. The US administration’s behaviour would entail substantial consequences on Americans, he warned.
Earlier, the US decided to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods and a 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods.
