Samgyethang, iconic Korean dish

Samgyethang is a traditional food widely used in the Koreans’ dietary life since olden times for longevity in good health and recuperation and a typical heritage element showcasing the advanced food culture and varied culinary techniques of the nation.

A chicken and insam are the main materials and chestnut, jujube, ginkgo, garlic and the like are put into the stomach of the chicken to be boiled together.

As a nourishing food for midsummer, samgyethang made with Kaesong Koryo insam has been very famous.

Insam, five or six days after digging, is recognized as the best material for the food.

According to a long-standing practice, a young black chicken weighing about 500 grams is mostly used.

For the delicate flavour and nutritive value, it is regarded as one of the best health-promoting foods, together with thick chicken soup.

As the dish enables people to savour the unique flavour of traditional food and enjoy the true taste of diverse dietary life, the excellent custom and tradition of making the dish are still being inherited and developed.
