Research achievements contribute to improvement of quality of medical service
February 2, 2025Precious research successes have recently been made to contribute to the quality improvement of medical service in the public health sector.
Pyongyang University of Medical Sciences completed new diagnosis and treatment methods by pushing ahead with the research to apply advanced medical technology to various internal diseases which had been recognized as incurable ones in the past.
A typical example is a treatment method that can effectively remove encephalomalacia caused by coal gas poisoning by applying the stem cell technology.
In general, when the brain is softened by coal gas poisoning, the brain tissue undergoes an organic change and the brain functions are paralysed. Therefore, it has been recognized that such patients cannot conduct mental activities, even though their life is guaranteed.
Researchers of the university learned that an advanced treatment method of restoring softened cerebral tissue by transplanting stem cells has been applied to the treatment of such patients around the world and conducted research into it to perfect a new treatment method. This method has restored many patients to health so far.
The university gradually widened the scope of laparoscopic surgery to complete the operation method for not only colon diseases but also tumour and established the treatment method for emergency cases with hernia which is known as a condition for which surgery is difficult and stomachache of unknown cause.
Laparoscopic surgery provides great clinical benefits as the wound by operation is small, it causes minimal bleeding and patients can leave the hospital one or two hours after surgery. At present, the university can reportedly perform laparoscopic surgery for 27 abdominal diseases requiring surgery.
It established 10-odd advanced diagnosis and treatment methods including a cure for heat stroke using quantized self-myelomonocyte and introduced them into clinical practice. It also completed guide and reference books for treatment and sent them to preventive and curative institutions across the country.
It also wrote such new teaching materials of academic significance as the textbooks on symptomatology and developed such IT products as a respiratory patient diagnosis program and heart sound listening program, thereby contributing to the improvement of education and qualifications of medical workers.
Medical workers of the Kim Man Yu Hospital, who established methods of treating 20-odd abdominal diseases using a cutting-edge technology of laparoscopic surgery in the past, have recently completed the methods of operation for not only gastric cancer but also carcinoma of gallbladder to cure many cases.
Medical workers applied a new and original method for the operation of lower bile duct cancer, which had taken much longer time, to reduce the operation time by half and the physical burden on the patient while shortening the treatment period.
Besides, the hospital has introduced various advanced treatment methods including a subdural hematoma surgery, an ischemic cerebrovascular surgery and the transplanting of intestinal flora for the treatment of chronic digestive tract diseases to increase the effectiveness of treatment.
