Lagoon Tongjong is situated in Kunsan-ri of Thongchon County, Kangwon Province.

Nearly one million years ago, crustal movement took place to form a bay.

Over time the entrance to the bay was blocked up by piles of sediments to form Lagoon Tongjong. The annual mean temperature of the area with a comparatively mild climate and heavy rainfall is 11.5℃  and the annual precipitation is around 1 239mm.

The lagoon, 19km in circumference, 5.2km long and 0.6km wide, covers an area of 4.84㎢. The surface of the lagoon, five metres deep, is at the same level as the sea.

Around the lagoon are rocks of fantastic shape like Hyongje (brothers) Rocks and Pucho (Buddha) Rock which are associated with the legends related to the lagoon. And the mud on the lagoon bed is used for medical treatment.

The limpid and serene lagoon with an islet in its centre is surrounded by densely wooded hillocks and sandy beaches pink-tinted all over with blooming sweet briers, presenting a beautiful landscape. Now it is a holiday resort and tourist attraction.
