Rimyongsu Falls

January 17, 2025

In midwinter, Mt Paektu unfolds spectacular scenes. Among them there is the scene of Rimyongsu Falls at the foot of the mountain.

The name Rimyongsu is derived from the word meaning a village where shoals of chars swim in clear water.

Rimyongsu Falls are the rare underground water falls.

Consisting of nine main streams, the waterfall has myriads of small falls running down between the streams.

The groundwater taking rise from Lake Chon at the summit of Mt Paektu flows through the crevices of basalt rocks to form the falls. Therefore, the water volume and temperature remain unchanged all year round.

The waterfall evokes different sentiments according to season and its scene in winter is more spectacular.

Some of its streams freeze and others do not in winter. There are also streams running down between icicles. In particular, the surrounding forest area turns into a hoarfrost forest as the mist rising from the groundwater comes into contact with cold air.
