Mother of three scientists
January 9, 2025All three sons of Kim Jong Suk, a woman living in Ryomyong-dong of Taesong District in Pyongyang, are scientists.
In November last year, hanging the Communist Mother Honour Prize awarded to their mother beside their honour certificates, the sons said, “Our success is inconceivable apart from your efforts, mum.”
The painstaking efforts of the mother who brought up her children to be scientists can be proved by a collection of mathematical problems.
One day, while examining the children’s study, Jong Suk saw test papers with low marks. She thought hard about how to improve their ability. The following day she began to make a collection of math problems on the basis of her knowledge learnt at university and several reference books.
Though she was always busy solving scientific and technological problems arising in practice as an engineer at a factory, she kept making exact demands on herself to make the collection, which contained thousands of problems, greeting the new day at her desk.
Whenever each of the children who had studied in this way entered university, Jong Suk said, “You should study hard, bearing in mind that you are studying not to graduate from university but to support the country with knowledge.”
She thus trained her children to be scientists. On the day when she was awarded the Communist Mother Honour Prize, she said, “I am a war orphan but thanks to the state’s benefits I could study to my heart’s content at
