UN General Assembly adopts convention against cyber-crimes
December 30, 2024The UN General Assembly adopted a UN convention against cyber-crimes on December 24.
The convention focuses on such actions as preventing terrorism, human trafficking, drug smuggling and financial crimes through Internet.
It pointed to the great danger being created due to the misuse of information communication technology, which makes it possible to conduct criminal activities on an unprecedentedly large scale and scope and at high speed, daily increasing influence of such cyber-crimes on victims and negative effects on the state, society, enterprises and individuals.
The first international criminal and judicial treaty provided through negotiations of UN member nations in 20-odd years, it makes sure that international cooperation is bolstered up in the fight against cyber-crimes.
According to information released by the United Nations, the convention will be signed in an official ceremony to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, next year, and when the 40th country ratifies it, it will take effect in 90 days since then.
