Pyongyang Bell
November 21, 2024The bell is located beside the Taedong Gate in Taedongmun-dong, Central District, Pyongyang.
It was originally hanging on the gatehouse of the Taedong Gate and it was removed to the northern general's terrace as the northern castle of the Walled City of Pyongyang was rebuilt in 1714. But a fire broke out in the northern general’s terrace and it was broken. The present bell was cast in 1726. It is 3.1 metres high, its mouth is 1.6 metres wide and it weighs 12 914kg. The materials of the bell are cast iron and copper.
The bell was rung to tell the hours and sound an alarm till the 1890s.
