The Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations called for reform of the UNSC.

In a speech at a recent session of the UN General Assembly, he said that the operation of the UNSC is now affected by high-handed politics, geopolitical confrontation and double standards and its prestige and honour are constantly being tarnished.

Saying that unprecedented human casualties and destruction have been caused by the conflict lasting for more than a year in the Gaza Strip, but individual countries have repeatedly prevented the UNSC from taking strong action and that even an adopted resolution has not been implemented effectively, he stressed that such a situation should not last and cannot be tolerated.

China supports the comprehensive and systematic reform of the UNSC, he said, adding that but it is resolutely opposed to deliberately promoting the reform programme by force to destroy the unity of the member states and cause new contradictions.
