Greenhouse farms gather in bumper harvests

November 1, 2024

A sea of fresh green vegetables has unfolded in large-scale vegetable production bases built in recent years one after another, contributing to improving the people’s diet.

The Ryonpho Greenhouse Farm produces various kinds of tasty and nutritious vegetables in large quantities, giving joy to inhabitants of South Hamgyong Province.

It increased the output of such vegetables as bok choy, cabbage, hot pepper and cucumber 1.2 times by applying scientific farming methods.

In close cooperation with relevant units the farm raised productivity by using lighting devices of different colours at the production sites and established a recycling system of nutrient solution in greenhouses. And it introduced the cylindrical vegetable cultivation device, installed a large number of cultivation pots and made effective botanical chemicals to put greenhouse vegetable production on a scientific and intensive basis at a higher level, thus providing a guarantee for increasing the per-hectare yield. The farmers increased the yield at hydroponic greenhouses by applying nutrient liquid and managing environment according to varieties on a scientific basis while ensuring good harvests of vegetables at soil greenhouses by manuring and cultivating them on a scientific basis. The farm built a biopesticide production base to minimize the damage by harmful insects and updated the intelligent integrated production system to monitor and manage production processes and elements in a more detailed way.

The Jungphyong Greenhouse Farm exchanged and shared successes and experience of the units and employees who took the lead in the manuring and cultivation of vegetables and ensured they led to good production results. And it introduced technical innovation plans for the employment of advanced cultivation techniques by using the cylindrical vegetable cultivation device while giving precedence to the introduction of vegetable seeds of improved varieties. As a result, it doubled the production of vegetables by introducing eight cylindrical vegetable cultivation devices at Block No. 74. Sci-tech achievements were made such as the introduction of the device for collecting and recycling nutrient solution into tens of blocks of hydroponic greenhouse to reduce the production costs. The farm also increased the production of vegetables by making effective use of all spaces including the greenhouse walls and footpaths. It directed efforts to the production of functional vegetables while increasing the production of fruit vegetables including watermelon, melon, and tomato and leaf vegetables including bok choy and celery by selecting and distributing vegetable varieties properly.

The Kangdong Combined Greenhouse Farm overfulfils its monthly and quarterly vegetable production plans to supply more vegetables to the citizens of Pyongyang.

The residents of neighbourhood unit No. 37 in Ryonhwa-dong No. 1 of Central District, Pyongyang, said that Kangdong vegetables taste especially good as they are produced at the singular greenhouse farm.

The farm has continued to produce large quantities of vegetables including cucumbers, tomatoes and bok choy since it harvested the first crop grown by introducing advanced cultivation methods to suit the characteristics of greenhouses. The general control room provides a reliable guarantee for vegetable production by automatically controlling optimized environment management and vegetable nutrition management according to the types of greenhouses. Nutrient liquid production and supply bases in different parts of the farm provide necessary nutrient solutions periodically and regularly without hitch in the growth of vegetables.
