Under the universal 12-year compulsory education

September 5, 2024

In September 2012, the law on enforcing a universal 12-year compulsory education was adopted at the Sixth Session of the 12th Supreme People’s Assembly of the DPRK.

In fact, it was not easy for the country to extend the education system for one year free of charge at the beginning of a new century of the Juche era despite manifold trials and ordeals facing it.

But with a deep insight into the important role education plays in the revolution and construction, Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, published such works as “Let Us Make Ours a Country of Education and a Talent Power by Bringing about a Radical Improvement in Education in the New Century” to provide important guidelines for the successful educational progress.

At the same time, a series of Party and state measures were taken to develop education, and the Third Plenary Meeting of the Seventh Central Committee of the WPK set the development of education along with science as an undertaking for the everlasting prosperity of the country to successfully maintain the lifeline of the revolution and discussed and decided on important issues for it.

He continued his field inspection tour of the field of education including newly-rebuilt Pyongyang Teachers Training College, Pyongyang University of Architecture and the Paeumui Chollikil (250-mile Journey for Learning) Schoolchildren’s Palace.

Marked achievements were made in the educational field afterwards.

Many new teaching methods and education support multimedia presentations for each subject developed by teachers were widely introduced into educational practice, teaching qualifications of teachers were improved at a fast rate and a regular technical senior middle school system was established across the country to give a strong impetus to the development of all sectors including the metallurgical, electric power and coal industries.

Kim Jong Un showed warm love for and placed great trust in the educators.

He highly praised the teachers who volunteered to work at branch schools on islands and other schools in the frontline areas and remote mountain villages and put those, who devoted themselves to training students to become competent talents of the country whether they were recognized or not, forward as patriots.

With the habit of giving top priority to education being established throughout society, a social and all-people campaign was conducted for supporting schools and projects were vigorously pushed forward to improve the educational conditions and environment in line with the world trend of educational development and pedagogical requirements.

The vitality of the universal 12-year compulsory education is growing day by day and the rosy future of the country is brought forward under the wise leadership of the respected General Secretary who prioritizes education.
