June 22, 2024

Lake Yonphung was built in 1956 according to a grand nature-harnessing programme of the state for irrigating fields around South Phyongan Province.

The lake is 14.87 square kilometres in area, 89.3 kilometres in circumference, 16 kilometres long and 0.9 kilometres wide.

Its major source of water is the Taedong River and atmospheric precipitation. Its water flows along a more than 2 000km-long waterway to irrigate 100 000-odd hectares of cropland.

There are a children’s camp, holiday camp, sanitarium and relaxation centre by the lake.
